Wraparound Balcony Tile Installation — Austin Hill Country

The Challenge

A second-story wraparound balcony on a luxury Austin home had reached the end of its surface life — worn, inconsistent, and visually mismatched against an otherwise well-maintained estate property. The challenge wasn't just cosmetic. Exterior tile work at elevation demands material selection and installation technique that account for thermal expansion, moisture drainage, and long-term structural movement — none of which are forgiving of shortcuts. The balcony wraps the full perimeter of the home's upper floor, with curved sections at the corners and uninterrupted views of the Hill Country treeline and a pool below. The surface had to perform as an outdoor floor in the Texas climate while reading as a premium finish from both inside the home and from the exterior.

Our Approach

Brothers Construction Group installed large-format porcelain tile in a travertine-look finish across the entire wraparound balcony — covering both the open-air terrace sections and the covered corridor that runs the length of the home's second story. The tile was selected for its slip resistance rating, frost tolerance, and low porosity — appropriate for a surface that sees full sun, rain, and temperature swings year-round in Central Texas. Grout joints were kept tight and uniform throughout, with proper slope engineered into the substrate to ensure positive drainage away from the structure at every point along the run. The curved transition at the corner of the balcony required field-cut tiles to maintain consistent joint spacing around the arc — a precision detail that separates a professional installation from a patchwork one. The neutral warm-grey tone of the tile complements the home's stucco exterior and connects visually to the natural limestone and cedar of the Hill Country landscape beyond the railing.

The Result

A full-perimeter balcony surface that performs like infrastructure and looks like a design choice. The travertine-look porcelain reads as natural stone from a distance and holds up under daily outdoor use without the maintenance demands of actual stone. The installation is level, properly drained, and tight at every joint and transition. From the interior looking out, the floor disappears into the view — which is exactly how a well-executed outdoor surface should work.
